New ABC News/Washington Post and NBC/Wall Street Journal polls reveal that President Obama is now facing the lowest approval ratings in the history of his tenure. Even Democratic pollster Peter Hart, who conducted one of the polls with a Republican, says that “Obama is no longer the favorite to win re-election.”
The ABC News/Washington Post poll found that 43 percent of Americans approve of the job the president is doing, while 53 percent disapprove. The previous low for disapproval had been 52 percent, almost exactly one year ago today. The NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll found that President Obama’s approval rating is at 44 percent, while 51 percent disapprove.
In previous polls, many Americans liked the president as a person, even if they didn’t like his policies. But unfortunately for the Obama Administration, that trend is changing. The NBC News/Wall Street Journal Poll found that equal percentages (44 percent) of all Americans have positive and negative feelings about the president as a person – with no difference in approval/disapproval.
In a hypothetical presidential race, 44 percent of registered voters would support a generic Republican over the president, while 40 percent would continue to support Obama. The president is in a fight for his life, with most of the problems coming from a poor economy and the Obama Administration’s inability to create jobs. Congress plays a part in the troubles with their unwillingness to pass legislation that opens the door for job creation. As the president faces new lows in his own approval, Congress also has record lows in approval from the American public.
